The S8AT was the first production Donkervoort equiped with a turbo charger; a system which Donkervoort completely developed in-house.
Due to all environmental regulations in 1988, Ford had to build their engines with a catalyst. Unfortunately this made the engines not powerful enough for use in a Donkervoort. Because Ford hadn't any alternatives, a new engine was built.
It's basis was the old double valve two litre Ford engine, but Donkervoort equiped it with the Garret T3 turbo charger, intercooler, Cosworth pistons, a new fuel injection system and a 3 way catalytic convertor. It delivered 170 bhp as a 2.0 litre engine and 190 bhp as a 2.2 version.
The first S8AT's used the chassis of the S8A. Later versions used the chassis from the D10. This chassis was wider, stronger and more important it's torsion stiffness had increased. The new front and rear wheel suspension also came from the D10.
Since 1991 disc brakes were fitted at the rear.
